FlashSystem 7300 Memory and Cache Performance

The FlashSystem 7300 uses two active-active node canisters and can be configured with up to approximately 768 GB of system memory per node, providing as much as 1.5 TB of total system memory across the control enclosure.

Memory is particularly important for workloads involving substantial metadata activity, Data Reduction Pools, large numbers of volumes, deduplication and high levels of concurrent I/O. Increasing cache and system memory can therefore improve overall efficiency and scalability even when the installed FlashCore Modules remain unchanged.

Performance should not be evaluated solely by the speed of the installed NVMe media. The FlashSystem controllers, available cache, adapter configuration, RAID design and host-side architecture all influence the performance ultimately delivered to applications.

FlashCore Module Performance Characteristics

FlashCore Module capacity can also influence individual drive performance. Within the FCM4 family, the larger 19.2 TB and 38.4 TB modules provide greater published per-module bandwidth and read IOPS than the smaller 4.8 TB and 9.6 TB modules.

FCM4 CapacityMaximum Read BandwidthMaximum Write BandwidthApprox. 16K Read IOPSEndurance
4.8 TB Up to approximately 2,200 MB/s Up to approximately 750 MB/s Approximately 150K 1 DWPD
9.6 TB Up to approximately 2,200 MB/s Up to approximately 750 MB/s Approximately 150K 1 DWPD
19.2 TB Up to approximately 3,500 MB/s Up to approximately 1,500 MB/s Approximately 200K 1 DWPD
38.4 TB Up to approximately 3,500 MB/s Up to approximately 1,500 MB/s Approximately 200K 1 DWPD
FCM Performance Insight: Moving from a 9.6 TB FCM4 to a 19.2 TB or 38.4 TB FCM4 can provide more than additional capacity. IBM also publishes higher per-module read bandwidth, write bandwidth and read IOPS for the larger FCM4 capacities.

Maximum Internal FlashCore Capacity

The IBM FlashSystem 7300 contains 24 internal NVMe slots. When all 24 slots are populated with 38.4 TB FlashCore Modules, the nominal installed FlashCore capacity is 921.6 TB. This value represents installed module capacity before Distributed RAID parity, rebuild area and other array overhead are considered. IBM also publishes effective or logical capacity values based on assumed data-reduction ratios. A 38.4 TB FlashCore Module can represent up to approximately 115.2 TB of effective capacity based on IBM's assumptions. A fully populated 24-drive enclosure could therefore conceptually hold approximately: 24 × 115.2 TB = 2,764.8 TB ≈ 2.76 PB effective capacity

Effective Capacity Warning: Effective capacity is not guaranteed usable capacity. Compression and data reduction depend heavily on the workload. Data that is already compressed, encrypted or deduplicated may achieve significantly lower data-reduction ratios.

Host Connectivity and Performance

A FlashSystem capable of millions of IOPS can still be limited by host-side connectivity. The FlashSystem 7300 supports multiple high-speed host interface options so that SAN and network bandwidth can be matched to storage performance requirements.

  • 32 Gb Fibre Channel
  • Supported higher-speed Fibre Channel configurations
  • FC-NVMe / NVMe over Fibre Channel
  • 25 Gb Ethernet
  • 100 Gb Ethernet
  • iSCSI
  • NVMe over supported Ethernet transports

The IBM FS7300 system supports multiple host adapters per node canister. For high-throughput environments, performance planning should include the number of host ports, multipathing design, switch bandwidth, host HBA capabilities and queue-depth settings rather than considering the FlashSystem controllers in isolation.

Enterprise Scale Limits

In addition to raw storage performance, the FS7300 is designed to support large virtualized and consolidated storage environments. At applicable IBM Storage Virtualize levels, configuration limits include up to 2,048 hosts, 2,048 volume mappings per host and as many as 64,000 host mappings per system. IBM also documents support for as many as 8,192 Fibre Channel host-port registrations at applicable software levels, although practical limits can be lower depending on operating system, SAN topology and host configuration.

Expansion Capacity vs. NVMe Performance

The FlashSystem 7300 can attach 4657-12G, 4657-24G and 4657-92G SAS expansion enclosures to substantially increase total system capacity. Expansion storage should, however, be distinguished from the internal NVMe tier when comparing performance.

The internal control enclosure provides the lowest-latency path to FlashCore Modules and NVMe SSDs. SAS-attached HDD and SAS SSD expansion storage provides additional capacity and tiering flexibility, but it should not be expected to provide the same latency or IOPS characteristics as the internal NVMe media.

FlashSystem 7300 Performance at a Glance

Performance at a Glance: The IBM FlashSystem 7300 can deliver up to approximately 4.3 million IOPS, sub-50 microsecond read latency, up to approximately 55 GB/s bandwidth, as much as 1.5 TB of system memory, 24 internal NVMe drive slots and host connectivity reaching 100 Gb Ethernet. Actual performance varies according to configuration and workload.

IBM FlashSystem 7300 Upgrade and Replacement Planning

Before ordering a FlashSystem 7300 replacement part or capacity upgrade, verify the following:

  • Machine type and model, normally 4657-924
  • System serial number
  • Installed IBM Storage Virtualize software level
  • Existing feature codes
  • FRU number displayed on the installed component
  • FlashCore generation and capacity
  • Current RAID configuration
  • Available node-canister PCIe adapter slots
  • Adapter symmetry between node canisters
  • Required optics and cables
  • SAS chain configuration when adding expansion enclosures
  • Supported drive capacity and media type for the intended RAID array
Important: Do not assume that two IBM parts with the same capacity or interface are interchangeable. IBM feature support can depend on machine type, node-canister generation, Storage Virtualize software level, firmware and existing hardware configuration.

IBM FlashSystem 7300 Feature Code and Part Number Identification

IBM uses several identifiers for FlashSystem hardware, and understanding the difference is important when ordering replacement components.

IdentifierExamplePurpose
Machine Type / Model 4657-924 Identifies the FlashSystem 7300 control enclosure
Feature Code ADSF Identifies a configurable IBM feature such as a 9.6 TB FCM4
Ordering Part Number 4657-ADSF Machine type plus IBM feature used for configuration and ordering
Service / FRU Part Number 03NK831 Identifies a physical replacement component or hardware revision

Because multiple FRU numbers can correspond to the same IBM feature, the most reliable replacement procedure is to verify the feature code, installed FRU, machine type, firmware and IBM-supported replacement list before ordering hardware.
