IBM FlashSystem 5100 Model 2078-4H4 is a virtualized storage system designed to meet high-performance storage requirements, including ultra-low latency, cost-effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission-critical reliability. The IBM FlashSystem 5100 Model 2078-4H4 is an All-Flash storage system, but is also available in a hybrid flash configuration. The IBM FlashSystem 5100 Model 2078-4H4 All Flash Storage model has feature code AHZD, and the 2078-4H4 Hybrid Flash Storage model has feature code AHZE. Both the All Flash and Hybrid FlashSystem 5100 configurations support NVMe FlashCore Modules and industry-standard NVMe flash drives in the control enclosure. However, the hybrid flash offering supports adding IBM FlashSystem expansion enclosure models 2078-12G, 2078-24G, and 2078-92G that support SAS flash drives and SAS HDD drives, which allows for more flexible configurations.

Existing FlashSystem expansion enclosure models 2077-12F, 2077-24F, and 2077-92F can also be attached to the hybrid version of the IBM FlashSystem 5100 offering, and models 2077-AFF and 2077-A9F can be attached to the all-flash version of the IBM FlashSystem 5100 offering. Existing FlashSystem expansion enclosure models 2078-12F, 2078-24F, and 2078-92F can be attached to the hybrid version of the IBM FlashSystem 5100 offering, and models 2078-AFF and 2078-A9F can be attached to the all-flash version of the IBM FlashSystem 5100 offering. In addition, older Storwize V5000 models 112, 124, 212, 224, 312, 324 and Storwize V5100 Model 424 can attach the newer FlashSystem 5100 expansion enclosure models 2077-12F, 2077-24F, 2077-92F, 2078-12F, 2078-24F, and 2078-92F.

IBM FlashSystem 5100 Model 2078-4H4 is designed to support FlashCore Modules, industry-standard flash drives, and an intermix of both. FlashCore Modules integrate IBM MicroLatency technology, advanced flash management, and reliability into a 2.5-inch SFF NVMe, with built-in performance-neutral hardware compression and industry-standard self-encrypting NVMe flash drives.

NOTE: All drives are dual-port and hot-swappable. Drives can be intermixed where applicable. Expansion enclosures can be intermixed behind the SFF control enclosure. Storage-class memory drives can only be populated in drive bays 21-24.

Scalability
A single FlashSystem 5100 control enclosure can support up to 20 expansion enclosures with a maximum of 760 drives per system. Expansion enclosures are designed to be dynamically added without downtime, helping to quickly and seamlessly respond to growing capacity demands. With two-way system clustering, the size of the system can be increased to a maximum of 1,520 drives. See the Limitations section for scalability limits. Further scalability can be achieved with virtualization of external storage. When IBM FlashSystem 5100 virtualizes an external system, capacity in that external system inherits the functional richness and ease of use of IBM FlashSystem 5100.

The IBM FlashSystem 5100 is designed to offer high system and data availability with the following features:

Security and Compliance
IBM FlashSystem 5100 model 2078-4H4 supports encryption for data at rest. Encryption is performed by the IBM FlashSystem 5100 control enclosure for data stored within the entire IBM FlashSystem 5100 system, including the control enclosure, all attached expansion enclosures and for all data stored in externally virtualized storage subsystems. Encryption is enabled on IBM FlashSystem 5100 through the acquisition of the Encryption Enablement feature. The Encryption Enablement feature enables encryption on the entire IBM FlashSystem 5100 system and externally virtualized storage subsystems. The Encryption USB Flash Drives (Four Pack) feature or IBM Security Key Manager (SKLM) are required for encryption keys management.

FC and Ethernet connectivity with intermix flexibility
IBM FlashSystem 5100 Model 4H4 includes eight 10 Gb Ethernet ports standard for iSCSI connectivity, two 1 Gb Ethernet ports for system management, and can be configured with one I/O adapter feature to provide up to eight 16 Gb or 32 Gb Fibre Channel ports with FC-NVMe support or up to four 25 Gb Ethernet ports with iSCSI and iSER (RoCE V2 and iWARP) support.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize combines a variety of IBM technologies, including deduplication, compression, thin provisioning, SCSI Unmap, HyperSwap (high-availability solution), Easy Tier (automatic and dynamic data tiering), encryption of internal and external virtualized storage, FlashCopy (snapshot), and remote data replication. These technologies are designed to enable IBM FlashSystem 5100 to offer a rich set of functional capabilities and deliver extraordinary levels of storage efficiency when used together.
