IBM FlashSystem 9200 Performance
The FlashSystem 9200 was IBM's highest-performance distributed FlashSystem platform of its generation.
IBM published maximum system performance reaching approximately:
- Up to 4.5 million IOPS
- Up to 45GB/s bandwidth
- Minimum latency down to approximately 70 microseconds
These figures describe a complete FlashSystem 9200 system under IBM test conditions and should not be interpreted as the performance rating of an individual drive.
Actual performance depends on factors including:
- FlashCore Module or NVMe drive type
- Drive count
- Distributed RAID configuration
- Host adapters
- Fibre Channel or Ethernet infrastructure
- Block size
- Read/write ratio
- Compression ratio
- Storage Virtualize software level
- Application workload
24 Internal NVMe Drive Positions
The IBM 4666-AG8 contains 24 front-accessible NVMe-capable storage positions.
IBM supports three principal storage classes in the FlashSystem 9200 control enclosure:
- IBM FlashCore Module 2
- IBM-qualified industry-standard NVMe flash drives
- NVMe Storage Class Memory
These internal NVMe storage devices are different from the SAS flash drives installed in external 4666-AFF and 4666-A9F expansion enclosures.
IBM FlashCore Module 2 Support
The FlashSystem 9200 uses IBM FlashCore Module 2 as its supported FlashCore generation. The FlashSystem 9200 does not support FCM3 or FCM4 as replacement upgrades simply because those newer generations share similar physical capacities.
FCM2 uses an NVMe PCIe Gen3 U.2 architecture and provides:
- Hardware-based inline compression
- Self-encryption
- T10-DIF data protection
- Enterprise flash management
- Consistent low latency
- High IOPS and bandwidth
AHS5 – 4.8TB IBM FlashCore Module 2
AHS5 identifies the 4.8TB FCM2 option for FlashSystem 9200.
- Feature Code: AHS5

Maximum Internal FlashCore Capacity
A fully populated 4666-AG8 containing twenty-four 38.4TB AHS8 FCM2 devices has:
24 × 38.4TB = 921.6TB of nominal installed FlashCore Module capacity.
This represents the sum of the physical module capacities before RAID and other system overhead.
IBM's FCM2 documentation identifies the 38.4TB module as providing up to 87.96TB maximum effective capacity per FCM where the stored data achieves sufficient compression.
Effective capacity is dependent upon data compressibility and should not be confused with guaranteed usable physical storage.
FlashCore Module RAID Requirements
IBM's FlashSystem 9200 configuration guidance recommends Distributed RAID for FlashCore Module arrays.
- A minimum of six FCMs is normally required for applicable FCM Distributed RAID configurations.
- Distributed RAID 6 is recommended.
- Distributed RAID 5 is supported where applicable.
- FCMs within the same array must use compatible capacities and types.
- IBM FlashCore Modules must not be mixed with industry-standard NVMe SSDs within the same array.
- SAS expansion drives must not be mixed with NVMe control-enclosure drives within an array.
Industry-Standard NVMe SSD Options
The FlashSystem 9200 control enclosure also supports IBM-qualified industry-standard NVMe SSDs.
These drives support enterprise NVMe storage, hardware-based data-at-rest encryption and T10-DIF protection. They do not provide the built-in hardware compression of IBM FlashCore Modules.
IBM's original FlashSystem 9200 drive family includes AHT1 through AHT5. Current IBM documentation emphasizes the 1.92TB through 15.36TB capacities, while AHT1 remains relevant for installed systems and replacement identification.

Maximum Industry-Standard NVMe Capacity
Twenty-four 15.36TB AHT5 drives provide:
24 × 15.36TB = 368.64TB of nominal installed NVMe flash capacity.
Actual host-usable capacity is lower after RAID protection, distributed spare capacity, metadata and system overhead.
Industry-Standard NVMe RAID Options
IBM supports several RAID arrangements for applicable industry-standard NVMe configurations, including:
- RAID 0
- RAID 1
- RAID 10
