38.4TB FCM3 RAID Configuration Considerations
The 38.4TB FCM3 has additional RAID configuration considerations compared with smaller FCM3 capacities on the IBM FlashSystem 7300.
For applicable IBM Storage Virtualize 8.5.4 and 8.6.x releases, IBM specifies:
- DRAID1: 38.4TB FCM3 modules are not supported.
- DRAID6: Supported.
- Maximum 38.4TB FCM3 drives per DRAID6 array: 24.
- FlashSystem 7300 RAID strip size: 256 KiB for the applicable configurations.
Always verify the configuration limits for the exact IBM Storage Virtualize release installed on the system before creating or expanding an array.
FCM3 and FCM4 Compatibility
IBM FlashCore Module 4 provides a compatible replacement and expansion path for FlashCore Module 3. On supported IBM FlashSystem 5200, 7300, and 9500 systems, FCM4 modules can be introduced without requiring all existing FCM3 modules to be replaced simultaneously.
FCM4 may be used for several purposes in an existing FCM3 environment:
- Replacement of an FCM3 module where supported.
- Extension of an existing FCM3 RAID array.
- Additional storage in the same FlashSystem.
- Creation of new dedicated FCM4 arrays.
- MES upgrade scenarios.
Can FCM3 and FCM4 Be Installed in the Same FlashSystem?
Yes. FCM3 and FCM4 can coexist within supported IBM FlashSystem 5200, 7300, and 9500 environments.
This allows an existing ADSD-based environment to retain its FCM3 capacity while FCM4 modules are introduced for replacement or expansion purposes.
Can FCM3 and FCM4 Be Mixed in the Same RAID Array?
Yes. FCM4 was designed to operate as a replacement or extension within supported FCM3 RAID arrays.
There is an important functional limitation when FCM3 and FCM4 are mixed within the same array:
Organizations that require FCM4-specific Computational Storage functions should create dedicated RAID arrays composed entirely of FCM4 modules and meet the applicable IBM Storage Virtualize software requirements.
FCM3 / FCM4 Compatibility Summary

FCM2 and FCM3 Compatibility
FCM2 and FCM3 do not provide the same array-level compatibility available between FCM3 and FCM4.
FCM2 and FCM3 cannot be intermixed within the same RAID array. Architectural changes between the generations include changes to flash technology, compression implementation, interface characteristics, and supported capacities.
Hardware-Based Inline Compression
IBM FlashCore Module 3 performs inline data compression directly within FlashCore hardware. This design increases effective storage capacity for compressible data while reducing the compression workload placed on the FlashSystem controller processors.
Benefits include:
- Increased effective storage capacity
- Reduced physical flash consumption
- Hardware-assisted data reduction
- Reduced compression overhead on FlashSystem controllers
- Consistent application response times
- High storage density for compressible workloads
High-Capacity FlashCore Storage
At 38.4TB per module, the ADSD is the largest capacity available within the FlashCore Module 3 generation.
The higher individual module capacity enables FlashSystem 7300 configurations to provide substantial physical flash capacity while using fewer drive slots than configurations based on smaller FCM3 capacities.
The actual usable and effective capacity of an array depends on:
- Number of installed FlashCore Modules
- Distributed RAID configuration
- Rebuild-area requirements
- Data-reduction characteristics
- Stored workload characteristics
- IBM Storage Virtualize configuration
Encryption and Data Protection
The IBM ADSD FlashCore Module incorporates hardware-based data-protection capabilities directly within the FlashCore architecture.
- Self-encrypting storage technology
- Hardware-based data-at-rest protection
- T10-DIF data-integrity protection
- Integration with IBM FlashSystem encryption and security capabilities

Replacement and Expansion Considerations
Before purchasing or installing an IBM ADSD or equivalent 38.4TB FlashCore Module 3, verify:
- The exact IBM FlashSystem model and machine type.
- The correct machine-specific IBM feature code.
- The FRU or replacement part number of the installed FlashCore Module.
- The installed FlashCore firmware level.
- The IBM Storage Virtualize software level.
- The capacity and FlashCore generation of modules already present in the target array.
- The distributed RAID level used by the target array.
- The maximum number of 38.4TB FCM3 modules permitted by the installed software release.
- Whether the module will be used for replacement, array expansion, MES upgrade, or creation of a new array.
- Whether FCM4-specific Computational Storage capabilities are required.
Because the ADSD is a 38.4TB module, RAID restrictions should be checked carefully before ordering media for an existing FlashSystem 7300 array. The supported configuration depends on both the hardware platform and the installed IBM Storage Virtualize release.
How to Identify an Installed FCM3
The FlashCore firmware level provides a convenient method of identifying the installed FlashCore generation. FlashCore firmware beginning with 3_ identifies a FlashCore Module 3.
For example:
Firmware Level: 3_1_11
The first digit identifies the FlashCore generation, making the example an FCM3.
The IBM FlashSystem management interface can also be used to review drive information including capacity, firmware level, FRU part number, operational status, endurance information, and RAID membership.
IBM ADSD 38.4TB FCM3 Summary
The IBM ADSD 38.4TB NVMe FlashCore Module 3 provides the highest individual module capacity available in the FCM3 generation for the IBM FlashSystem 7300. It combines enterprise NVMe storage with hardware-based inline compression, self-encryption, data-integrity protection, and integration with IBM Storage Virtualize.
The ADSD feature identifies the 38.4TB FCM3 for FlashSystem 7300 configurations. Equivalent 38.4TB FCM3 capacity uses AGSD on the FlashSystem 5200 and AHSC on the FlashSystem 9500.
Existing FCM3 environments can also use FCM4 as a supported replacement and expansion path. FCM4 may replace an FCM3, extend a supported FCM3 RAID array, or be introduced as additional storage. When FCM3 and FCM4 are mixed within the same RAID array, the FCM4 operates with FCM3-level functionality.
For the 38.4TB capacity in particular, administrators should verify RAID restrictions before installation. FlashSystem 7300 configurations do not support 38.4TB FCM3 modules in DRAID1, while DRAID6 is supported subject to the limits of the installed IBM Storage Virtualize release.
