IBM ADSB 9.6TB NVMe FlashCore Module 3 (FCM3)
IBM Feature Code ADSB | 9.6TB NVMe FlashCore Module 3 for IBM FlashSystem 7300
The IBM ADSB 9.6TB NVMe FlashCore Module 3 (FCM3) is a third-generation IBM FlashCore storage module designed for the IBM FlashSystem 7300 and related IBM FlashSystem platforms that support FCM3 technology. FlashCore Module 3 combines enterprise NVMe flash storage with hardware-based inline compression, self-encryption, advanced flash management, data-integrity protection, and tight integration with IBM Storage Virtualize. Unlike conventional enterprise NVMe SSDs, IBM FlashCore Modules incorporate IBM-developed hardware and firmware optimized specifically for FlashSystem environments. This architecture enables high throughput, predictable low latency, hardware-assisted data reduction, and enterprise-class reliability while minimizing processing overhead on the FlashSystem controllers. The ADSB feature code identifies the 9.6TB FCM3 used with the IBM FlashSystem 7300. IBM part numbers associated with this 9.6TB FCM3 family include 03JK077, 03JK163, 03JL077, 03JK693, 03GH933, and 03LG627.

FCM3 and FCM4 Compatibility
IBM FlashCore Module 4 was designed as a compatible replacement and expansion path for FlashCore Module 3. On supported FlashSystem 5200, 7300, and 9500 systems, FCM4 modules can be used to replace FCM3 modules, extend an existing FCM3 RAID array, provide additional storage, or be introduced as part of an MES upgrade.
This compatibility allows an existing FCM3 environment to continue operating while FCM4 capacity is introduced without requiring all FCM3 modules in the system to be replaced at the same time.
Can FCM3 and FCM4 Be Mixed in the Same FlashSystem?
Yes. FCM3 and FCM4 can coexist within supported IBM FlashSystem 5200, 7300, and 9500 systems.
Supported use cases include:
- Maintaining existing FCM3 arrays while adding new FCM4 storage.
- Replacing an FCM3 module with an FCM4 service replacement where supported.
- Using FCM4 modules to extend an existing FCM3 RAID array.
- Creating dedicated all-FCM4 arrays alongside existing FCM3 arrays.
Can FCM3 and FCM4 Be Mixed in the Same RAID Array?
Yes. FCM4 can be used within an existing FCM3 RAID array, including as a replacement for an FCM3 module or as an extension of an existing supported array.
There is an important functional distinction when the generations are mixed:
To take advantage of FCM4-specific Computational Storage capabilities, administrators should create an array composed entirely of FCM4 modules and meet the applicable IBM Storage Virtualize requirements.
FCM3 / FCM4 Compatibility Summary
| Configuration | Supported | Operational Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| FCM3 and FCM4 in the same FlashSystem | Yes | Supported on applicable FlashSystem 5200, 7300, and 9500 systems |
| FCM4 used as an FCM3 replacement | Yes | FCM4 behaves as FCM3 when used within an FCM3 array |
| FCM4 used to extend an FCM3 RAID array | Yes | FCM4-specific features are unavailable to the mixed array |
| Dedicated FCM3 and FCM4 arrays in the same system | Yes | Allows an all-FCM4 array to retain FCM4-specific functionality |
| FCM4 Computational Storage in a mixed FCM3/FCM4 array | No | An all-FCM4 array is required for FCM4-specific Computational Storage functionality |
FCM2 and FCM3 Compatibility
FCM2 and FCM3 do not share the same array-level compatibility available between FCM3 and FCM4.
FCM2 and FCM3 cannot coexist within the same RAID array. Changes between the generations include PCIe technology, NAND technology, compression implementation, and capacity characteristics.
Hardware-Based Inline Compression
IBM FlashCore Module 3 performs inline data compression directly within the FlashCore hardware. Compressing data within the storage module increases effective capacity for compressible workloads while reducing the compression workload placed on the FlashSystem controller processors.
Benefits include:
- Increased effective storage capacity
- Reduced physical flash consumption
- Minimal FlashSystem controller overhead for FlashCore compression
- Consistent application response times
- Improved storage density for compressible workloads
Encryption and Data Protection
The IBM ADSB FlashCore Module provides hardware-based data-protection capabilities integrated directly into the FlashCore architecture.
- Self-encrypting storage technology
- Hardware-based data-at-rest protection
- T10-DIF data-integrity protection
- Integration with IBM FlashSystem encryption and security capabilities
FCM3 vs. FCM4
FCM3 and FCM4 share common capacity points and core FlashCore capabilities, but FCM4 introduced additional Computational Storage functionality.
| Capability | FCM3 | FCM4 |
|---|---|---|
| NVMe FlashCore Technology | Yes | Yes |
| Hardware-Based Compression | Yes | Yes |

Replacement and Expansion Considerations
Before purchasing or installing an IBM ADSB or equivalent 9.6TB FlashCore Module 3, verify:
- The exact IBM FlashSystem model and machine type.
- The correct machine-specific IBM feature code.
- The FRU or replacement part number of the installed module.
- The installed FlashCore firmware level.
- The IBM Storage Virtualize software level.
- The capacity and generation of modules already present in the target RAID array.
- Whether the module will be used for replacement, array expansion, MES upgrade, or creation of a new array.
- Whether FCM4-specific Computational Storage capabilities are required.
Administrators should verify the existing array configuration and IBM-supported hardware matrix before ordering expansion or replacement media, particularly when introducing a different FlashCore generation.
How to Identify an Installed FCM3
IBM FlashCore firmware levels provide a convenient method of identifying the installed FlashCore generation. An FCM firmware level beginning with 3_ identifies a FlashCore Module 3. FlashCore firmware, FRU, capacity, and other drive information can also be reviewed from the IBM FlashSystem management interface.
IBM ADSB 9.6TB FCM3 Summary
The IBM ADSB 9.6TB NVMe FlashCore Module 3 provides enterprise NVMe flash capacity for the IBM FlashSystem 7300 with hardware-based inline compression, self-encryption, data-integrity protection, and integration with IBM Storage Virtualize.
The ADSB feature identifies the 9.6TB FCM3 for FlashSystem 7300 systems, while equivalent 9.6TB FCM3 capacity is represented by AGSB on FlashSystem 5200 and AHSA on FlashSystem 9500 configurations.
For existing FCM3 environments, FCM4 provides a supported replacement and expansion path. An FCM4 can replace an FCM3, extend an existing FCM3 RAID array, or be introduced as new storage on supported systems. When FCM3 and FCM4 are mixed in the same RAID array, however, the FCM4 operates with FCM3-level functionality. Dedicated all-FCM4 arrays are required when FCM4-specific Computational Storage capabilities are needed.
