IBM EXP24SX ESLS Storage Expansion Enclosure for IBM Power Servers
The IBM EXP24SX storage expansion enclosure provides 24 2.5-inch SFF-2 Gen2 SAS bays that supports up to 24 hot-plug Solid State Drives SSDs or Hard Disk Drives HDDs and fits in 2 EIA of a 19-inch rack. The IBM EXP24SX SAS storage expansion enclosure has ESLS feature code and is supported in IBM Power Server models with IBM i, AIX and Linux Server operating systems. The quantity of IBM EXP24SX SAS storage expansion enclosures supported depends on the IBM Power Server model. IBM AIX, Linux, and VIOS systems can order an IBM EXP24SX ESLS with four sets of 6 bays in mode 4, two sets of 12 bays in mode 2, or one set of 24 bays in mode 1. IBM i Power systems must use one set of 2 bays in mode 1 when attaching an IBM EXP24SX ESLS storage expansion enclosure. The IBM EXP24SX SFF-2 bays use the exact same carrier trays as the previous IBM EXP24S 5887 storage expansion Drawer.
Warning: Only a technically qualified CE should change modes of an IBM EXP24SX, as improperly changing modes can destroy existing RAID sets, prevent access to data, or allow other partitions to access another partition's data. The mode setting can be changed in the field using commands documented in the IBM EXP24SX user manual, but it is highly recommended to hire an expert if you are not familiar with the proper reconfiguration steps required.
The IBM EXP24SX ESLS storage expansion enclosure has redundant SAS paths to all drives via two redundant Enclosure Services Modules ESM. Four mini-SAS HD narrow ports are attached to PCIe Gen3 SAS adapters such as the IBM 57B4, EJ0J, EJ0M, 57CE, EJ0L, EJ14, or when attached to an imbedded SAS controller of an IBM POWER10, POWER9 or POWER8 server model. Attachment between the SAS controller and the storage enclosure SAS ports is via the appropriate SAS YO12 or X12 cables. The PCIe Gen3 SAS adapters support 6Gb throughput. The IBM EXP24SX has been designed to support up to 12Gb throughput if future SAS adapters support that capability.
The EXP24SX uses redundant power supplies and two power cords. Order two feature ESLA for AC power supplies. The enclosure is shipped with adjustable depth rails and can accommodate rack depths from 59.5 - 75 cm (23.4 - 29.5 inches). Slot filler panels are provided for empty bays when initially shipped from IBM.
