The 3588 IBM System Storage TS1050 (machine type 3588, model F5A) is designed to be installed in an IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library (machine type 3584) to offer high capacity and performance for the midrange open systems environment. This model incorporates the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) IBM Ultrium 5 Tape Drive with enhanced maximum tape drive throughput over the IBM LTO generation 4 Tape Drive (Ultrium 4). It has a native data transfer of up to 140 MB/sec. In addition, with the use of the IBM LTO Ultrium 5 1.5 TB Data Cartridge, the TS1050 nearly doubles the maximum tape cartridge capacity providing up to 1.5 TB native physical capacity (3.0 TB with 2:1 compression), as compared to the IBM Ultrium 4 Tape Drives and cartridges. IBM Ultrium 5 Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 4 Data Cartridges and read LTO Ultrium 3 Data Cartridges. The TS1050 has a 8-Gbps Fibre Channel dual-ported interface for connection to a wide spectrum of open system servers.
