The IBM 5638 Ultrium 5 LTO5 Tape Drive is serial attached SCSI (SAS) tape drive, in a 5.25-inch half-high form factor and is installed in IBM Power Systems for backup and recovery. The IBM 5638 Ultrium 5 LTO5 SAS Tape Drive has 42C2006 42C4007 part numbers and supports IBM i AS400, AIX adn Linux Server OS. TThe IBM 5638 Ultrium 5 LTO5 Tape Drive will read older LTO3 Ultrium 3 tape media, and is read/write compatible with both LTO4 Ultrium 4 and LTO5 Ultrium 5 tape media. The IBM 5638 Ultrium 5 LTO5 Tape Drive will not read or write on Ultrium 2 and Ultrium 1 cartridges. The IBM 5638 has a 140 MB/sec Data Transfer Rate with LTO5 media and does speed matching down to 40 MB/sec.
Each LTO5 Ultrium 5 tape cartridge can store up to 1.5 TB of uncompressed data, or up to 3.0 TB of compressed data. The actual capacity varies depending on the application, the type of data, and the tape cartridge. When data compression is activated, 1.5 TB is typical and 3.0 TB is possible. The default setting of data compression is controlled by the host system. The user and the application software can control the activation or deactivation of the data compression setting. The drive can optimally achieve a 2:1 compression ratio.
