IBM EJ14 PCIe3 12GB Cache RAID PLUS SAS Adapter Quad-port 6Gb x8 CCIN 57B1 01DH742

The EJ14 PCIe3 12GB Cache RAID PLUS SAS Adapter provides high performance IBM Enterprise SSD and HDD controller function using PCIe Gen3 technology for IBM i Power AIX and Linux Power9 and Power8 systems. A pair of EJ14 adapters are required to provide mirrored write cache data and adapter redundancy. The EJ14 integrated flash memory provides protection of the write cache without batteries in case of power failure and up to 12GB of write cache is provided using compression of 4 GB of physical cache. The EJ14 provides four Mini-SAS HD (high density) narrow connectors for the attachment of SAS drives located in the IBM EXP24S, EXP12SX, or EXP24SX storage enclosures. X, YO or AT SAS cables with HD narrow connectors are used to attach to these drawers. A max of 4 EXP24S can be attached with a maximum of 96 HDD or a maximum of 72 SSD per pair of EJ14. If more than 48 SSD are attached, no HDD can be attached. A mix of EXP24S, EXP12SX or EXP24SX is supported on the same EJ14 adapter pair. Two AA SAS cable with HD narrow connectors are attached to the EJ14 pair to communicate status and cache content information and are required unless three or four ports are being used to attach HDD/SSD.

IBM Recommends any SSD or HDD WRITE intensive workloads to use use the EJ14 or EJ0L controller to get the required write cache performance.

IBM EJ14 provides RAID 0, RAID 5, RAID 6, and RAID 10, RAID 5T2, RAID 6T2, and RAID 10T2 for AIX, Linux and VIOS. Two tier arrays (5T2, 6T2 and 10T2) combine both HDD and SSD into a single array with Easy Tier functionality. AIX, Linux and VIOS can also provide OS mirroring (LVM). On systems that support IBM i, the adapter provides RAID 5 and RAID 6 for IBM i. RAID 10 is supported by IBM i 7.2. IBM i provides both OS mirroring and data spreading. This adapter is very similar to the EJ0L SAS adapter, but EJ14 uses a second CPU chip in the card to provide more IOPS capacity and can attach more SSD. The EJ14 adapter CCIN is 57B1 and 01DH742 part number. Both 5xx and 4k byte sector HDD/SSD are supported. 5xx and 4k drives cannot be mixed in the same array.

The EJ14 is supported on IBM Power9 and Power8 system models, including: 9009-41A, 9009-42A, 9009-22A, 9008-22L, 9223-22H, 9223-42H 8286-41A, 8286-42A, 8284-21A, 8284-22A, 8408-44E and 8408-E8E or in EXP24S SAS bays (SFF-2) attached to a Power8 or the following Power7 system models: 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8268-E1D, 8202-E4D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, 8205-E6C, 8205-E6D, 8408-E8D, 9109-RMD, 9117-MMC, 9117-MMD, 9179-MHC, 9179-MHD, 9119-FHB

Note: HDD and SSD cannot be mixed on the same SAS port, but can be mixed on the same adapter.

The IBM EJ14 PCIe3 4-port 12 GB Cache RAID + SAS Adapter is a PCI Express (PCIe) generation 3, x8, single-wide, full-height, short form-factor adapter that provides high-performance capabilities and supports the attachment of SAS hard disk drive (HDD) and SAS solid-state drive (SDD). A pair of FC EJ14 adapters are required to provide additional performance, mirrored write cache data and adapter redundancy. If the FC EJ14 pairing is broken, then the write cache is disabled. Integrated flash memory with super capacitors provides protection of the write cache without batteries in case of power failure. EJ14 effectively provides up to 12 GB of write cache that uses compression of 4 GB of physical cache.

The EJ14 adapter provides four Mini-SAS HD (high density) narrow connectors for the attachment of SAS drives in the 5887 disk drive enclosure (IBM EXP24S SFF Gen2-bay Drawer). Specific SAS cables with HD narrow connectors are used to attach to the 5887 disk drive enclosure. To provide the highest bandwidth, two AA SAS cables with HD narrow connectors are used to attach the two paired FC EJ14 adapters on the third and fourth adapter ports (T2, T3) to communicate status and cache content information. Both AA SAS cables are required unless 3 or 4 ports are being used to attach the SAS drives. When all connectors are attaching SAS drives, the communication between the adapter pair is performed through the SAS fabric by way of the disk enclosures and cabling. A maximum of 96 SAS devices are supported using four 5887 disk drive enclosure. The SAS devices can be all HDDs or can have up to 48 SSD + 48 HDDs (HDDs must be on the 3rd and 4th ports). They can have a maximum of 72 SSDs with no HDDs and must have an AA cable on the top port. If there are over 48 SSDs, then no HDDs can be attached.

The adapter provides RAID 0, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, RAID 5T2, RAID 6T2, RAID 10T2, and OS mirroring (LVM) for the AIX, Linux, and VIOS operating systems. Under the IBM i operating system, the adapter provides RAID 5, RAID 6, OS mirroring, and data spreading. RAID 10 is supported by IBM i Version V7R2 or later.
