Description
Using one of IBM's family of SSA adapters, these 7133 models can be configured for high performance, multihost attachments, or economical RAID 5 data protected storage on Micro Channel or PCI channels of selected RS/6000 and RS/6000 SP processors.
Using the IBM SSA RAID Adapter for PC Servers, a PCCo option, they may be attached to certain IBM PC servers.
Using the IBM SSA RAID Adapter for PC Servers (#4011), they may be attached to certain COMPAQn and H-P servers.
Using the IBM SSA to Sun SBus Interface Controller Card (#4003), they may be attached to certain Sun SPARCstation, SPARCserver and SPARCcenter systems.
Using the IBM 7190-100, SCSI Host to SSA Loop Attachment, they may be attached to a range of Sun and H-P systems.
These IBM 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem models are functionally equivalent and can be populated with up to 16 auto-docking, customer replaceable, SSA disk drive modules. The disk drive modules are available in four different capacities: 1.1GB, 2.2GB, 4.5GB, and 9.1GB. The 9.1GB SSA Disk Drive features are available only in the Models 020 and 600. Four 2.2GB disk drive modules are standard for all models.
However, select features allow these to be replaced by the 4.5GB modules (all models) or the 9.1GB modules (Models 020 and 600 only) at the time of original order. Features are provided to add any combination of supported SSA disk drive modules, up to a maximum of 16, providing up to 145.6GB of disk storage capacity in Models 020 and 600 (using 9.1GB disk drives) or up to 72GB of disk storage capacity in Models 010 and 500 (using 4.5GB disk drives). The power cooling units are auto-docking and customer replaceable.
An SSA Fiber-Optic extender (feature 5500) is available on all models of the 7133. This feature supplies a pair of optical converters that convert electrical SSA signals into optical signals for transmission via customer supplied optical fibers. This feature allows the maximum distance between SSA nodes to be increased from 25 meters to 2400 meters for use in campus type installations. One feature 5500 is equivalent to a single SSA copper cable.
IBM 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem models are leading-edge, second generation serial storage subsystems that use industry-standard Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) to deliver outstanding performance, capacity/footprint, improved connectivity and availability, and enhanced attachability at a lower cost.
Product Positioning
The IBM 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem Model 010 and IBM 7133 SSA Subsystem Model 500 are second generation serial storage subsystems that significantly exceed the performance and capacity available with directly attached SCSI disk drives. The SSA Four Port Adapter can deliver 35MB/sec sustained to the RS/6000 Micro Channel and support up to 3000 ops/sec. It can also attach up to 96 SSA disk drive modules, 48 per loop.
In the transaction processing environment the IBM 7133 SSA Subsystem Model 010 or Model 500 provides the ideal solution when used as mirrored storage in a "high availability" cluster of RS/6000 server systems for applications that require sustained high performance despite a single failure. (If availability is more important than fast performance, or the customer specifies RAID 3 or 5, then the IBM 7135 RAIDiant Array or the IBM 7137 might be the correct solution.)
In engineering/scientific applications the ability to sustain high data rates makes the IBM 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem Model 010 or Model 500 an attractive solution.
Technical Description
The 7133 provides power and packaging for SSA disk drive modules. The Model 500 is a standalone unit similar in height to RS/6000 deskside systems.
The Model 500 provides slots for up to 16 SSA disk drive modules mounted in convenient carriers. These disk drive modules are auto-docking and may be replaced by the customer. The drives connect to four internal SSA loops which can be configured as independent loops or linked via external cables.
The 7133 can be populated with three different SSA disk drive modules. The Capacities supported are 1.1GB, 2.2GB and 4.5GB. The machine includes four 2.2GB disk drives as standard. These can be replaced by eight 1.1GB disk drive modules or four 4.5GB drives at time of original order. Features are provided to add any combinations of supported drives.
The 7133 includes two auto-docking power/cooling units. These will provide redundant power and cooling to disk drive module positions 1 to 4. They will also provide non-redundant power/cooling to positions 5 to 8. An additional unit is available as a selective feature, and this will provide redundant power and cooling to all 16 disk drive module positions. These units may also be replaced by the customer.
The 7133 has selectable cable features, up to 25 meters long, for attaching to an IBM High Performance 4-Port SSA Adapter in the attaching system, for linking the internal busses, and for connecting to other 7133 subsystems.
