The RS/6000 43P Model 240 is the first RS/6000 workstation/workgroup server to offer expandability to symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) in a desktop package at an affordable price. Symmetric multiprocessing provides the scalability that helps you execute your applications with better response times in order to solve complex problems much faster. It is designed to support microprocessor card upgradability through replacing the base PowerPC* 604e microprocessor with a 233MHz one or through expansion to a second 166MHz or 233MHz processor. The Model 240 offers advanced 3D graphics adapters, up to 1GB Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory, 64-bit and 32-bit PCI slots, choice of high performance disk drives, an 8X CD-ROM drive, and tape drives.

Model Highlights 7043-240
Powerful graphics capabilities - With comprehensive graphics support from entry 8-bit 2D to 24-bit true-color 2D, and up through high-performance 3D, the Model 240 is ready to tackle everything from business graphics to demanding mechanical design applications. In addition, IBM*'s multithreaded PHIGS library exploits the SMP architecture to provide excellent performance for PHIGS-based applications, such as MCAD.

Flexible and expandable - The standard configuration can expand to 1GB of ECC memory, 22.7GB of SCSI-2 Fast/Wide internal disk capacity, and up to 1.08TB (terabytes) of SCSI-2 or 873GB of Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) external disk storage. The two available disk/media bays plus the three PCI and two ISA expansion slots provide extra room for adding communications and graphics adapters.

Easy "plug-in" processor - Upgrading from a 166MHz system is as simple as plugging in a 233MHz Processor. Or you may convert from a one-way to a two-way SMP system by simply plugging in a second processor card of the same MHz.

Enhanced network connectivity - Use the built-in 10BaseT Ethernet** port to connect to your Ethernet network (no card or slot required). For increased performance, install the optional 10/100Mbps Ethernet adapter.

Description
The RS/6000 43P Model 240 delivers SMP capability at an exciting price point. The wide range of packaging options enables you to build a system that best suits your application environment.

The SMP scalability, extensive set of connectivity options, and expansion capabilities of the Model 240 make it well suited as both a workstation and entry workgroup server. As an SMP server, the Model 240 allows the seamless scaling of transaction processing power by adding a second processor. As a result, your workload will automatically be balanced between the two processors with no change to the operating environment.

The Model 240 comes standard with a 166MHz PowerPC 604e microprocessor. The PowerPC 604e processor has 32KB of instructional and data cache plus an additional 512KB of Level 2 (L2) cache to provide even greater power. A 233MHz process card with 1MB of L2 cache is optionally available. A second processor can be added for 2-way SMP configurations.

The base Model 240 has outstanding expansion capabilities such as 64MB ECC memory that can be expanded to 1GB to address a wide range of transaction processing and database needs. A broad selection of SCSI-2 Fast/Wide, UltraSCSI and SSA disk drives are available to store your vital information for rapid retrieval. It includes a 1-2 user, full function AIX* Version 4.1.5 or Version 4.2.1 package at no additional charge.

The entry system comes with 2.1GB of internal disk storage that can be expanded to 22.7GB. If your needs continue to grow, you can add external disk storage for up to 1.08TB of SCSI-2 or 873GB (SSA) disk storage.

The system features five expansion slots to support your choice of affordable, fast communications, graphics and storage controllers. There are two 32-bit PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slots, one 64-bit PCI slot, and two ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) slots.

In addition to the popular and widely used SCSI-2 interface, the Model 240 supports the SSA storage interface. SSA disks deliver outstanding performance for transaction-intensive applications (up to four times data transfer rates of SCSI-2) and offer redundancy features to keep your data safe.

Rounding out the Model 240 are standard 8X CD-ROM and 3.5-inch diskette drives, and integrated SCSI-2 Fast/Wide and Ethernet controllers. An integrated stereo audio capability supports many business multimedia and sophisticated network applications. Ports for line-in/line-out, headphone, and microphone are provided.

RAS:
Expansion is important, but a system must provide the reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) to run your most demanding tasks. Mainframe characteristics such as error detection, reliable hardware components, optional high availability clusters, fault management and concurrent diagnostics are part of every system. Each component was selected based on its reliability. Extensive integration testing has been conducted to ensure the highest possible quality. For example, the system and PCI busses have standard parity checking. The main memory is all ECC which helps improve availability by automatically correcting single bit errors.

An easy-to-read LED operator status panel on the front of the system helps improve troubleshooting capability. The three-digit display shows the system status at all times. The Model 240 also features concurrent diagnostics to help provide more complete diagnostics without requiring system shutdown.

AIX Version 4 can help protect your data by choosing disk mirroring or meta data consistency in the Journal File System. Should a disk need to be replaced, you can swap it in while the system is running helping you avoid costly down time. You also can use internal or external RAID subsystems.

For maximum high availability and horizontal growth you can cluster the Model 240 with other RS/6000 models. The RS/6000 HACMP (High Availability Clustered MultiProcessing) software has been recognized by D.H. Brown as the leading UNIX** cluster solution.

Graphics Support:
For 2D graphics applications, the Model 240 offers a number of graphics accelerators. The POWER GXT110P 2D accelerator meets the graphics needs of many commercial applications and provides an entry point for workstation users. It is also a cost-effective choice for server environments that require a graphical user console.

For high-levels of 2D graphics function and performance, you can choose either the 8-bit POWER GXT250P or the 24-bit true-color GXT255P graphics accelerator. In fact, the combination of these graphics accelerators and AIX 's Softgraphics 3D support for the OpenGL and PHIGS 3D APIs enables you to run 24-bit entry-level 3D applications, such as production CAD, at the price of a 2D system.

For more advanced 3D graphics capability, the Model 240 offers several options that differ in their cost and processing speeds. The POWER GXT500P and GXT550P graphics accelerators provide outstanding 3D accelerated functionality at an affordable price and are well suited for wireframe and entry solid modeling applications. The higher performing POWER GXT800P graphics accelerator has optional hardware texture mapping, which is ideal for performing solid modeling and visualization. Externally attaching a POWER GXT1000* graphics accelerator delivers IBM's highest function 3D graphics.
