The RS/6000 Model F50 server is the first of a new generation of 1 to 4-way symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) workgroup and enterprise servers that provide for unprecedented commercial price/performance. Utilizing the advanced PowerPC* 604e processor and X5 Level 2 (L2) cache system, the Model F50 is well suited for customers who want commercial solutions to address mission critical online transaction processing as well as collaborative computing comprised of Lotus Notes**, Domino Server, Internet, intranet, extranet, and groupware application solutions. The Model F50 can be used as a stand-alone, multiuser application server and has the connectivity to participate in most currently installed UNIX and PC networks. It can also be configured as a database or transaction server with your choice of SCSI-2, UltraSCSI, or Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) RAID disk by taking advantage of the storage expansion capability of the system. It is designed to allow for system growth in memory, disk, media devices, and 1 to 4-way processor scalability as needs grow over time.

Description
The Model F50 server base offering includes a 166MHz PowerPC 604e processor, 128MB of Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) SDRAM memory (expandable to 3GB), 32KB of both instruction and data Level 1 (L1) cache, an ECC X5 L2 cache comprised of 256KB per processor in an 8-Way Set Associative implementation, a 4.5GB SCSI-2 Fast/Wide disk drive, dual integrated SCSI-2 Fast/Wide controllers, an Ethernet** 10Base5/T controller, an 8X CD-ROM, and a 3.5-inch diskette drive. Its SMP design allows easy expandability through the addition of a second, third or fourth 166MHz processor each with its own L1 and L2 cache.
The Model F50 includes a 1-2 user, full function AIX Version 4.2.1 package at no additional charge.
The F50 is packaged in a 9 X 22 (nine I/O slots, up to 22 disk/media bays - 10 standard and 12 optional) floor standing tower that is attractive, compact and quiet. It is designed for easy installation by users because it is shipped with the desired adapters and internal devices already configured and installed, and the AIX software optionally preinstalled.
The Model F50 server includes a modular disk subsystem that allows fast, easy addition and replacement of drives. It has a hot-swappable storage maximum capacity of 163.8GB and a flexible I/O subsystem of five PCI (32-bit), two PCI (64-bit), and two shared (32-bit) PCI/ISA expansion slots. The I/O channels supported are the industry common, high- performance PCI bus in addition to the traditional ISA bus. The bus implementation is a tri-peer PCI bus architecture resulting in an aggregate I/O bandwidth of up to 400MB/sec. All adapters have undergone thorough testing to assure system compatibility.
Reliability, Availability, Serviceability:
The Model F50 integrates key reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) attributes including:
ECC on system memory and L2 cache which corrects environmentally induced single bit intermittent memory failures as well as single bit hard failures. With ECC, the majority of L2 cache and memory failures will not impact system operation. ECC also provides double-bit memory error detection which protects data integrity in the event of a double- bit memory failure.
The system, I/O and PCI buses are designed with parity error detection.
Hot-swappable disk drives so users can take disks offline or put them back into service without interrupting the operation of their system.
RAID 0, 1, and 5 for internal devices (optional via adapter) which provides data integrity and fault tolerant in the event of disk drive failure.
Online (concurrent) and remote (LAN or modem) system diagnostics.
AIX's Journaled File System maintains file system consistency and prevents data loss when the system is abnormally halted due to a power failure.
Service Director* for RS/6000 (available at no additional charge if your RS/6000 processor is covered by an IBM Warranty or IBM Maintenance Service Agreement) monitors and analyzes system errors, and if needed, can automatically place a service call to IBM without customer intervention. It also performs problem analysis on a subset of hardware- related problems and can automatically report the results to IBM Service. This can reduce the effect of business disruptions due to unplanned system outages and failures.
A service processor is included as standard and provides an immediate means to diagnose, check status, and sense operational conditions of a remote server, even when the main processor is inoperable. It enables or contributes to the following RAS functions:
Integrated system environmental monitoring/alerting. This includes AC/DC voltage, fan speed, and temperature sensing.
Early Power Off Warnings (EPOW) and error log analysis and alert.
Auto-dial out via use of Service Director, so as to call the IBM Service Center. The objective is to predict a potential component failure and automatically dispatch IBM Service to take preventative maintenance measures to avoid an outage.
Programmable by the system administrator to reboot after a power loss, hardware checkstop failures, machine check interrupt, and operating system hang or failure.
The Model F50 disk subsystem has been designed to provide exceptional expandability with easy installation and service. The Model F50 disk offerings allow internal disk capacities ranging from 4.5GB to 172.8GB (163.8GB hot-swappable) in either 4.5GB or 9.1GB increments through use of the seven available disk/media bays and 12 optional disk bays. The SSA storage interface may be utilized in addition to the popular and widely used SCSI-2 interface. SSA disks deliver outstanding performance for transaction-intensive applications (up to four times data transfer rates of SCSI-2) and offer redundancy features to keep your data safe. Up to 4.8TB (terabytes) of SCSI-2 or 3.5TB of SSA disk storage may be externally attached.
Applications Compatibility:
Customers with applications currently installed on RS/6000 processors can enjoy binary compatibility by installing AIX Version 4.2.1 on their Model F50 systems. This provides the ability to further distribute applications on low-cost servers without having to maintain different operating systems and applications, permitting rapid exportation to multiple remote sites.
