Model Description 4230-5S3
The IBM 4230 Model 5S3 is a 600 CPS, Serial/Parallel/Coaxial (ASCII/Non-IPDS) printer.
The IBM 4230 Printer is a family of heavy-duty serial impact matrix printers that may be used as workstation printers in the System/390*, System/370*, large S/36* and AS/400* systems environment, and as primary printers for small S/36 and AS/400 systems. The 4230 Printer combines the versatility and high reliability of the 4224 Printer with superior price/performance and exclusive design features, including one of the lowest noise levels of any tabletop printer in its speed and price range. The IBM 4230 Printers are offered in a range of models and feature 32K to 128K of memory, printing speeds of 375 cps, 480 cps, or 600 cps, twinaxial or coaxial attachments, SCS (PDS), IPDS (intelligent printer data stream), DSC (non-SNA 3270/IPDS) or DSE (LU3-3270) data streams, and an automatic forms-thickness adjustment that sets the gap between print head and paper precisely, eliminating a user task and improving paper handling and print-head life. The 4230 also offers new forms-handling features that include the Dual Purpose Module (DPM), which combines highly reliable feeding of continuous forms and minimal paper waste with the document-on-demand (DOD) tearoff function, an optional automatic sheet feed (ASF) that provides automatic feeding of cut sheets, and ease-of-use features like an 80-character liquid crystal display (LCD) operator panel that makes setup and daily operations more efficient by providing prompts and menu selections. Some models are available to support advanced printing functions available through the IPDS while maintaining compatibility with the 4224 Printer and existing 4230 printers. Other models support the SCS (PDS) data stream and are compatible with the earlier IBM 3268 and 3287 Printers and IBM 4214 Printers. Still other models support the IBM Proprinter II XL, IBM Proprinter III XL, IBM 4224, and Epson FX 1050 ASCII emulation. The IBM 4230 has applications in environments such as the IBM mainframe, the IBM AS/400, the IBM RS/6000*, and the IBM Personal System/2*, and local area networks.
Model Abstract 4230-5S3
The IBM 4230 Model 5S3 attaches to the coaxial interface utilized by the 3174 Subsystem control, 3274 Control Unit, the 43X1 Processor Display/Printer Adapter, 4361 Workstation Adapter, and the ES/9370 Workstation Controller. Printing is up to 600 CPS and uses LU1 (SCS), DSC (Non-SNA 3270), and DSE (LU3-3270) data streams as currently supported on the 3270 and listed 4300 systems. 32 K Memory is standard.

Description
Pennant Systems is extending the IBM 4230 Printer family with four new models: the 4230-4S3, 4230-4I3, 4230-5S3, and 4230-5I3. In addition to printing at 600 characters per second (CPS), these heavy-duty impact matrix printers come standard with multiple attachment capabilities. Each model supports simultaneous serial and parallel attachment plus either twinaxial or coaxial attachment.
These printers complement the capabilities of the IBM 4232-302 printer by providing improved customer value, full compatibility with the IBM 4224-3XX plus IBM Proprinter II XL, IBM Proprinter III XL and Epson FX 1050 emulation. The result is a complete ASCII printing solution combined with the ruggedness, proven reliability and system attachment support of the existing IBM 4230 Printer models.
IBM 4230 Printers may be used as workstation printers for large S/36, AS/400 systems, RS/6000, or Personal System/2 environments and as the primary shared printer for small S/36, AS/400 systems and LAN environments.
The new IBM 4230 Printers provide IBM Proprinter II XL, IBM Proprinter III XL, Epson FX 1050 and 4224-3XX emulation modes. These emulations are selectable from the operator panel.
Each of the new IBM 4230 Printers supports IBM PC ASCII (Centronics) Parallel, RS-232C Serial, and RS-422A Serial host interfaces. In addition, the 4230-4X3 models support twinaxial attachment and the 4230-5X3 models support coaxial attachment.
The IBM 4230 models introduced in this announcement are listed in the table below:
IMPROVED PRICE/PERFORMANCE
The IBM 4230 Printer Family replaces the IBM 4224-X0X family of printers. The new IBM 4230 Printers also may replace IBM 3268, IBM 3287 and IBM 4214 printers. The new 4230 printer models print in fast draft print quality mode at 600 CPS, offer simultaneous serial, parallel, and coax or twinax attachment capability, 4230 ruggedness and reliability, and a choice of datastream support at a very attractive price.
Business Solutions - Investment Protection:
Because the new 4230 Printer models offer combination attachment capability, customers can rest easy as their enterprise moves from a centralized to a distributed computing and printing environment. The new IBM 4230 Printers will move with the needs of the business from a mainframe or AS/400 system to a workstation or LAN environment. In fact, during the transition, the printers may be attached both to an ASCII and a traditional system host. The operator simply enables the attachment of choice by making an operator panel selection.
