Description
The IBM 3995 Optical Library Dataserver family provides online, direct access, high capacity storage needed for today's innovative business solutions. By providing online access to vast amounts of information at a lower cost than magnetic disk, while still providing direct access to data, the 3995 is ideally suited for infrequently accessed information currently stored on disk, tape, paper, or microfilm/fiche.
These new enhanced models of the 3995 feature high-capacity 5.2 GB (8x) Extended Multifunction Optical Drives using industry-standard 5.25-inch optical cartridges. In addition, these models support the following optical technologies:
Magneto-Optical (MO) rewritable: allows data on the cartridge to be modified or erased, optimizing the use of the optical cartridges.
Permanent Write Once/Read Many (WORM): provides a permanent copy of data by permanently altering the recording layer. This process is used to address business process, auditing, and/or legal requirements for the permanent retention of data.
Continuous Composite WORM (CCW): provides a lower-cost, software- protected copy of data through a software implementation of WORM, using rewritable media.
These IBM 5.2 GB Extended Multifunction Optical Drives read and write industry-standard 8x (5.2 GB, 4.8 GB, and 4.1 GB) and 4x (2.6 GB and 2.3 GB) rewritable optical cartridges, read and write 8x (5.2 GB) and 4x (2.6 GB) Permanent Write Once/Read Many (WORM) optical cartridges, and read and write 8x (5.2 GB, 4.8 GB, and 4.1 GB) and 4x (2.6 GB and 2.3 GB) CCW optical cartridges. The drives read 2x (1.3 GB and 1.19 GB) and 1x (650 MB and 595 MB) industry-standard rewritable and CCW optical cartridges, and 2x (1.3 GB) and 1x (650 MB) industry-standard permanent WORM IBM optical cartridges. This backward compatibility protects your investment by providing continued access to data on previously written cartridges and on several levels of backward compatible media. With application support, rewritable, permanent WORM, and CCW optical cartridges can be mixed within a library to provide maximum flexibility.
NOTE: 512 KB/sector optical media is not supported on the C1x, C3x, and C4x Models.

Low-Cost, Online Storage
The 3995 C-Series Optical Library family offers low-cost, high- capacity, direct access storage. These characteristics make the 3995 ideally suited as a low-cost extension to the online storage capacity for storage-intensive applications, less frequently accessed data, or environments where online access is required but sub-second response time is not necessary. Introducing the 3995 into the existing storage hierarchy can be
simple and easy.
When implemented in conjunction with a hierarchical storage management application, older and less frequently accessed data is automatically migrated from expensive magnetic disk to the 3995. The data is automatically recalled from the library when needed.
The 3995 can be used for data backup and archive applications. Optical cartridges are durable, offer a long-term archive life, and can easily be removed from the library for shelf or off-site storage. The direct access features of the 3995 give customers quick access to files, as well as concurrent access to all data residing on the same cartridge. The 3995 has incremental write and update capabilities which means an entire cartridge can be filled at your convenience.
Finally, any application or user can have direct access to the 3995 when it is complemented with optical library management software application. Library management applications make the library appear as one or more online volumes or directories, providing transparent access to the library. No application changes are required and the library can be easily partitioned and shared among groups of applications and users.
Bringing New Data into the Storage Hierarchy
The 3995 Optical Library family has a unique set of characteristics not offered by the traditional electronic storage mediums of magnetic disk and tape. These unmatched features, in combination with optical storage's low cost, high capacity, and direct access characteristics, make the 3995 the solution of choice for data currently stored on paper, microfiche, and microfilm. The 3995 delivers the following:
Permanent WORM technology addresses the business process and/or legal requirements for a permanent copy of the original data, Continuous Composite WORM (non-permanent) for a lower-cost, software-protected copy of the original data, and magneto-optical rewritable technology for accessing changeable data.
Removable cartridges provide shelf storage as the data becomes aged and access requirements become less frequent, giving customers additional capacity at a very small incremental cost.
Long-term media archive life satisfies business process and/or legal requirements for long-term data retention.
The 3995 provides an excellent solution for bringing new data online or keeping computer-generated data online for a longer period. As more information is retained and accessed online, customers' competitive advantage is improved through reduced costs, enhanced productivity, and improved customer service.
The cost of an optical storage solution is often much less than the cost of the raw materials, the storage space, and the labor associated with paper and/or microfiche storage and retrieval.
Enhanced productivity through easier and faster access to data since searches and retrievals are done at machine speed versus human speed. Also, multiple users can have access to the same data simultaneously, eliminating the need to wait for data to become available.
Improved customer service since inquiries can be resolved in a single phone call. With a few keystrokes, all the customer's data is quickly available to your customer service representative, eliminating the need for time-consuming and costly callbacks to the customer.
The opportunities enabled by the 3995 are virtually unlimited. Ideal application areas include:
Imaging and workflow for business documents and records, government documents and records, medical and patient records, engineering drawings, product diagrams, etc.
Computer Output to Laser Disk (COLD) as a replacement for microfiche and microfilm copies of customer statements, billing statements, transaction records, etc.
Report management for any type of report including customer lists, payroll, and accounting reports.
Application Solutions
Supporting software to manage the 3995 C6x Models is not provided with the libraries. Instead, supporting software and applications for the 3995 must be obtained separately from IBM, IBM Business Partners, and independent software providers.
Software support for the 3995 is available from IBM and application partners in such areas as document imaging, Computer Output to Laser Disk (COLD), report management, hierarchical storage management, and backup/archive. This broad base of application support allows the customer to select the preferred application for use with their library.
