The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library is an automated tape library incorporating IBM Ultrium LTO Tape Drives and attaching to AS/400(TM), RS/6000, RS/6000 SP, Netfinity, and other Unix and PC servers supporting OS/400, AIX(TM), Sun Solaris, HP-UX, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 2000 open systems with a Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI).

The IBM 3583 Model L72 has 72 Cart Slots, 7.2 TB Data capacity (native), 14.4 TB Data Capacity (Comp.), and 1-6 IBM Ultrium Tape Drives.

Highlights
The 3583 provides an IBM tape solution with reliable automation at open systems prices. Other features include:
Scalable from one to six IBM Ultrium drives and 18 to 72 IBM Ultrium Tape Cartridges
Up to 7.2 TB/14.4 TB (native/compressed) data storage capacity
Built-in bar code reader
Ultra2/Wide Low Voltage Differential (LVD) interface or Ultra/Wide High Voltage Differential (HVD) interface
External stand-alone or rack-mountable models

Description
The 3583 Scalable Tape Library library can be configured with one to six IBM Ultrium tape drives. Multiple drives offer enhanced functions such as faster transfer of data, simultaneous backup, concurrent read/write operations, and fault tolerance.

The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library is a stand-alone unit. With an optional feature, the 3583 can be mounted in an industry-standard EIA-310-D 19-inch rack. The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library utilizes IBM Ultrium tape cartridges providing 100 GB native capacity and up to 200 GB with 2:1 hardware-controlled data compression, giving the 3583 typical storage capacities of 3.6 TB, 7.2 TB, and 14.4 TB (with 2:1 compression), Models L18, L36, and L72 respectively. The 3583 has a per drive native data rate up to 15 MB per second and up to 30 MB per second with 2:1 compression. A bar code reader is included.

The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library can be used for save/restore, program distribution, migration, data interchange, automatic migration of data between disk storage and tape, and mass storage for data archive. DLT, Storage and tape management for the 3583 is provided by software such as Tivoli Storage Manager and other industry-leading compatible software offerings.
Scalable Automation

The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library is an excellent choice if you are:
Experiencing growth in online storage requirements
Considering a tape automation solution for your data storage needs
Considering an IBM Ultrium tape solution

The 3583 tape library contains from one to six IBM LTO Ultrium tape drives that each have a native data transfer rate of 15 MB/second and a cartridge capacity of 100 GB. The drives feature data compression hardware using an adaptation of IBM's Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC), which provides an effective data rate of up to 30 MB/second and a cartridge capacity of up to 200 GB (with 2:1 compression) on IBM Ultrium media. The 3583 models feature cartridge slot storage capacities of 18, 36, and 72 cartridges, providing total capacities of 1.8 TB, 3.6 TB, and 7.2 TB of native data. With compression, the largest model of the 3583, the Model L72, can store 14.4 TB of data. The 3583 Models L18 and L36 can be field upgraded to increase their capacity up to 72 cartridges and six drives. The 3583 library comes standard with a one-cartridge I/O station on Models L18 and L36 or a 12-cartridge I/O station on Model L72. Models L18 and L36 can be upgraded to a 12-cartridge I/O station with optional feature #8012.

Note: Although the IBM Ultrium tape drive in the 3583 provides the capability for high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. The compression technology used in the tape drive can typically double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

Each IBM Ultrium 3583 Scalable Tape Library has a display on the front panel that is used for displaying status and error codes. An operator control panel with an LCD display is on the front of the machine and provides status information and menu options. From this panel the operator can initiate actions such as moving and loading tape cartridges or invoking diagnostics. A key lock provides front door locking.
The IBM Ultrium 3583 Scalable Tape Library is designed for desktop operation but an optional rack mounting kit allows installation into an ANSI/EIA standard 19-inch rack with 14 EIA units of space. For customers requiring extra redundancy in their storage operations, an additional DC power supply option is available.

The IBM Ultrium tape drive supports the new Ultrium High Capacity Tape Cartridge, designed for increased tape speeds and high-density data recording.

Product Positioning
As you compare competitive tape solutions, consider:
Library scalability: 1 to 6 drives, 18 to 72 cartridges
Capacity and performance requirements
Data integrity, reliability, and availability
Storage usage and application requirements
Affordability
Loyalty to legacy or existing tape formats

The IBM Ultrium 3583 Scalable Tape Library and industry-leading software applications lead in addressing these requirements and constitute a functionally rich tape storage solution incorporating LTO Ultrium tape technology. You also gain flexibility of automated tape library management and unattended save/restore operations.

The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library contains from one to six IBM Ultrium tape drives with industry-leading 100 GB native capacity and up to 200 GB with typical 2:1 hardware data compression. This increased capacity combined with up to 72 cartridges available for use extends the total library capacity up to 14.4 TB of compressed data. Multiple drive models provide additional enhanced functions, such as faster transfer of data, simultaneous backup, concurrent read-write operations, and fault tolerance.

The 3583 offers improved performance, additional function, and greater capacity (number of drives and cartridges) over the existing IBM 7331 8mm Tape Library or IBM 7337 Digital Linear Tape libraries offered by IBM.

The 3583 improves performance by reducing load/unload time. It provides an alternative to DLT, 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives.

If you have applications where fast access to data is important or need a very reliable tape subsystem, you should consider the IBM Magstar MP 3570 Tape Subsystem. It offers Magstar reliability at open systems prices and is better suited for time-sensitive applications such as storage management, network serving, mixed digital libraries, image processing, and data warehousing.

For mission critical data protection, optimized for enterprise multi- mode and server attachment and read and write intensive applications, consider the proven IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem or the IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library.
