The IBM 7334 is an 8mm Tape Library.

The IBM 7334 Model 410 is available with one to four IBM Mammoth-2 tape drives. Thirty cartridge slots provide a compressed (with 2.5:1 compression) data capacity of 4.5 TB. The stand-alone IBM 7334 Model 410 8mm Tape Library protects your investment in 8mm technology and provides a significant increase in capacity and performance over the existing 7331 Model 305 8mm Tape Library. Offering automation for the latest IBM Mammoth-2 tape drives, the 7334 Model 410 utilizes the 8mm advanced metal-evaporated (AME) media data cartridge with SmartClean. This provides 60 GB native capacity and up to 150 GB at 30 MB/sec with typical 2.5:1 data compression. This equates to 43.2 GB/hr or 108 GB/hr respectively (per drive). This increased capacity combined with the 30 cartridges available for use extends the total library capacity up to 4.5 TB of compressed data. In addition, the 60 GB tape drives in the Model 410 provide backward read compatibility with the previous 20 GB tape cartridge format. Software support for the 7334 is provided by software such as Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM), AIX System Backup and Recovery/6000 (Sysback), and other compatible software offerings.

Description
The IBM 7334 Model 410 8mm Tape Library offers an increase in capacity over the IBM 7331-305 and the IBM 3449 Models 355 and 356, and greater capacity and function than the IBM 7208 Model 341 20 GB External 8mm Tape Drive or IBM 7208 Model 345 60 GB External 8mm Tape Drive. It features data compression hardware which provides an effective data rate of up to 30 MB per second and a cartridge capacity of up to 150 GB (with 2.5:1 compression) on 8mm advanced metal-evaporated (AME) media data cartridges with SmartClean. The 7334 features a 30-cartridge capacity, providing a total capacity of up to 4.5 TB in the library. The 7334 is equipped with one tape drive as standard equipment and can be expanded up to four drives with optional feature 0705.

Note: Although the tape drive in the 7334 Model 410 can give you high tape performance, other components of the system can limit the actual performance achieved. In addition, the compression technology used in the tape drive can more than double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data that is being compressed.

The 7334 has two removable and one fixed 10-cartridge magazines. Each library includes a display on the front panel that shows status and error codes. An operator control panel with LCD display on the front of the machine shows status information, including tape capacity and menu options. The keys next to the display enable you to select options. The door can be locked using a software-controlled lock for maximum security. You can configure the 7334 in many ways: Base-single host with one SCSI adapter. Single host with multiple adapters to enhance performance. The two modes of operation are: Manual mode, controlled by the operator panel switches, allows complete operator control.
Random mode allows tapes to be selected randomly by the host for reading or writing.

Product Positioning
Many customers are experiencing very rapid growth in online storage and are struggling to manage critical data in an expanding networked environment. To accommodate this growth, manage this critical data, and reduce manual operations, many are considering tape autoloaders and tape libraries with software for automatic backup and archiving.

Properly positioning competitive tape solutions considers:
The volume and loyalty to previous legacy existing tape formats
Capacity and performance requirements
Data integrity, reliability, and availability
Storage usage and application requirements

Affordability
IBM 7334 Tape Library and industry-leading software applications address these requirements and constitute an excellent tape storage solution incorporating improved 8mm tape technology. This tape library offers flexibility for automated tape library management and unattended save/restore operations.

Because of its read compatibility with existing Mammoth-1 8mm AME media tape formats, the Model 410 is an excellent replacement for the 7331 Model 305 library or the 7208 8mm Tape Drives. With its higher capacity and performance, it also is an excellent replacement for an IBM 7207 1/4-inch Tape Drive, or 4mm products such as the 7206 4mm Tape Drive, and the 7332 DDS-4 Tape Autoloader. If you have standardized on DLT tape, consider the IBM 7337 Digital Linear Tape Library Models 305 or 306. If you have applications where fast access to data is important, consider the IBM Magstar MP Tape Subsystem. It offers Magstar reliability at open system prices and is better suited for time-sensitive applications such as storage management, network serving, mixed digital libraries, image processing, and data warehousing.

If you need even higher performance or extremely reliable tape, consider the Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem or the Magstar 3494 Tape Library.

Supported Platforms: RS/6000 & pSeries
