The IBM 7208 is an External 8mm Tape Drive that provides additional function and enhancement capabilities to the AS/400 or RS/6000.
The IBM 7208 Model 345 has a media capacity of 60 GB (150 GB with 2.5:1 compression) data storage per cartridge and a sustained data rate of 12 MB per second (30 MB per second with 2.5:1 compression). This is three times the capacity and four times the data rate of the IBM 7208 Model 341. The Model 345 features data compression hardware using Adaptive Lossless Data Compression (ALDC), a state-of-the-art data compression technique developed by IBM. It also utilizes the IBM Mammoth-2 Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media data cartridge with SmartClean technology.
In addition to reading and writing on IBM Mammoth-compatible 8mm advanced metal-evaporated (AME) data cartridges, the 7208 Model 345 also provides backward read compatibility with previous 20.0 GB 8mm AME tape cartridges. The 7208 Model 345 is an excellent migration and interchange path from other 8mm tape drives and is a cost-effective solution for save-and-restore and archiving functions.
Highlights

Description
If your system needs include reliable, affordable, and ease-of-use tape backup, the IBM 7208 Model 345 is the right solution for you.
The IBM 7208 Model 345 60 GB External 8mm Tape Drive is a stand-alone, SCSI, streaming tape drive that attaches to the RS/6000 family of workstations and servers. It provides a media capacity of 60 GB (150 GB with 2.5:1 compression) data storage per cartridge and a sustained data rate of 12 MB per second (30 MB per second with 2.5:1 compression).
The 7208 Model 345 is a 60 GB external 8mm tape drive with a sustained data transfer rate of 12 MB per second. It features data compression hardware providing an effective capacity of up to 150 GB and an effective transfer rate of 30 MB per second, depending on the characteristics of the data transferred. User productivity is enhanced with the three times larger capacity and four times improved data rate over the previous 7208 Model 341. It thus provides a more cost-effective solution for save-and- restore and archiving functions.
Note: Although the 7208 Model 345 Tape Drive can give you high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. In addition, the compression technology used in the tape drive can double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data that is being compressed.
Product Positioning
The 7208 Model 345 60 GB External 8mm Tape Drive is an excellent solution for customers who use 8mm tape or require a larger-capacity or higher-performance tape backup. It can be and an alternative product to other externally attached, 8mm tape devices for the RS/6000 family of workstations and servers. Because of its read compatibility with earlier 8mm AME tape formats, the Model 345 is an excellent replacement for older 7208 8mm tape drives. With its higher capacity and performance, it also is an excellent replacement for IBM 1/4-inch models (7207) or 4mm models (7206), and other competitive products where this capability is needed.
If you are considering tape libraries with software for automatic backup because of rapid growth in online storage and a need to reduce manual operations and interventions, try the compatible IBM 7334 Model 410 8mm Tape Library with an 8mm tape drive. The IBM 7332 4mm DDS-2 Tape Autoloader is also available to meet lower capacity and performance requirements.
If you need higher-performance tape drives, consider the IBM Magstar MP Tape Subsystem, the IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem, or the IBM 3490 Enhanced Capability Magnetic Tape Subsystem. The Magstar 3590 and the 3490 are available for inclusion in the Magstar 3494 Tape Library.
