The IBM 7208 is an External 8mm Tape Drive that provides additional function and enhancement capabilities to the AS/400 and RS/6000.
Model Abstract 7208-341
The 7208 Model 341 20GB External 8mm Tape Drive is a stand-alone, SCSI, 8mm streaming tape drive that attaches to the RS/6000 family of workstations and servers. It provides a media capacity of 20GB (40GB with 2:1 compression) data storage per cartridge and a sustained data rate of 3.0MB per second (6.0MB per second with 2:1 compression). This is four times the capacity and six times the data rate of the IBM 7208 Model 011. The Model 341 features data compression hardware using an adaptation of IBM's Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) algorithm. In addition to reading and writing on new Mammoth-compatible 8mm advanced metal-evaporated (AME) data cartridges, the 7208 Model 341 also reads other 7.0GB or 2.3GB 8mm metal particle (MP) tape cartridges and reads the 5.0GB MP tape cartridges written by the 7208 Model 011. Providing an excellent migration and interchange path from other 8mm tape drives, the 7208 Model 341 is a cost-effective solution for save and restore and archiving functions.

Description
The 7208 Model 341 is a 20GB external 8mm tape drive with a sustained data transfer rate of 3MB per second. It features data compression hardware adapted from IBM's Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC), which provides an effective capacity of up to 40GB and an effective transfer rate of 6MB per second, depending on the characteristics of the data transferred. User productivity is enhanced with the four times larger capacity and six times improved data rate over the previous 7208 Model 011. It thus provides a more cost effective solution for save and restore and archiving functions.
Note: Although the 7208 Model 341 tape drive can give you high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. In addition, the compression technology used in the tape drive can double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data that is being compressed.
Product Positioning
The 7208 Model 341 20GB External 8mm Tape Drive is an excellent solution for customers who use 8mm tape or require a larger capacity or higher performance tape backup. It can be an enhanced replacement product for the IBM 7208 Model 011 tape drive and an alternative product to other externally attached, 8mm tape devices for the RS/6000 family of workstations and servers. Because of its read compatibility with earlier 8mm tape formats, the Model 341 is an excellent replacement for older 7208 8mm tape drives. With its higher capacity and performance it also is an excellent replacement for IBM 1/4-inch models (7207) or 4mm models (7206), and other competitive products where this capability is needed.
If you are considering tape libraries with software for automatic backup because of rapid growth in online storage and a need to reduce manual operations and interventions, try the compatible IBM 7331 Model 305 8mm Tape Library with an 8mm tape drive. The IBM 7336 4mm Tape Library Model 205 or IBM 7332 4mm DDS-2 Tape Autoloader is also available to meet lower capacity and performance requirements.
