The IBM 7332 is a 4mm DDS-2, DDS-3 or DDS-4 Tape Cartridge Autoloader.

The IBM 7332 Model 220 4mm DDS-4 Tape Cartridge Autoloader is a multiple cartridge tape autoloader with one 4mm DDS-4 tape drive. It features data compression that provides an effective capacity of up to 240 GB (with 2:1 compression) and a sustained data rate of up to 3.0 MB per second (6.0 MB per second with compression) depending on the characteristics of the data transferred. User productivity is enhanced with a three times larger tape cartridge capacity and higher data rate over the previous 7332 Model 110. The 7332 Model 220 provides a more cost-effective solution for save and restore and archiving functions than previous models.

Highlights
Magazine indexing of less than 9 seconds for a cartridge load/unload cycle (the time to unload one cartridge and load another)
Dual port SCSI connectors
Can be used for alternate IPL
Model Highlights 7332-220
The 7332 Model 220 is a large-capacity 4mm DDS-4 Tape Cartridge Autoloader using DDS technology that features:
Increased tape storage capacity up to 240 GB (with 2:1 compression) with the 6 cartridge magazine
Sustained data transfer rate of up to 3.0 MB per second (6.0 MB per second with compression)
Enhanced reliability over DDS-3 technology
Ability to read and write DDS-4, DDS-3, and DDS-2 tape cartridges
External, self-powered packaging

Description
The IBM 7332 Model 220 4mm DDS-4 Tape Cartridge Autoloader extends the IBM family of 4mm tape offerings. It now has an enhanced autoloader for attachment to the RS/6000 family of workstations and servers. The 7332 Model 220 is a multiple cartridge tape autoloader with one 4mm tape drive that operates in streaming mode and uses Digital Data Storage (DDS) technology. This externally attached tape autoloader attaches to a LVD/SE SCSI adapter via a Fast/Wide SCSI cable and provides additional tape storage capacity for save and restore operations. The 7332 Model 220 is a dual port device and interchange of data is supported with the 7332 Model 110 and with the IBM 7206 Models 005, 110, and 220.

The 7332 Model 220 uses 20 GB capacity cartridges to obtain 120 GB capacity with the six cartridge magazine. With 2:1 compression, the 7332 tape autoloader magazine can contain up to 240 GB capacity. The 4mm tape drive in the 7332 Model 220 has a sustained data rate of up to 3.0 MB per second (6.0 MB per second with compression). It contains a media recognition feature for greater reliability by allowing only data grade tape cartridges to be used for writing data. The DDS-4 model also offers improved read-channel performance, improved self-cleaning, energy saving features, and fewer electronic components than the DDS-3 model. It features a field-proven mechanism that uses an electronic tape path control to ensure long life for the head, drum, and key components.

The 7332 tape autoloader incorporates DDS tape media. In addition to reading and writing on DDS-4 formatted tape cartridges, the 7332 Model 220 also reads and writes on DDS-2 or DDS-3 tape cartridges. The 7332 Model 220 is an excellent migration and interchange path from other 4mm tape drives and is a cost-effective solution for save and restore and archiving functions.

Note: Although the tape drive in the 7332 Model 220 can give you high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. In addition, the compression technology used in the tape drive can double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data that is being compressed.
The 7332 has interchangeable magazines to reduce tape handling. Backups can be easily processed. Internal diagnostics are activated when the 4mm test cartridge is inserted and loaded into the drive (system intervention is not required). A status light indicates when to clean the tape path.

Product Positioning
The IBM 7332 Model 220 4mm DDS-4 Tape Cartridge Autoloader is an excellent save and restore device when your requirements exceed the older 4mm and 1/4-inch tape drive capacity but you do not require the higher capacity, higher priced 8mm tape drives. It extends the IBM family of 4mm tape offerings with an enhanced autoloader for external attachment to RS/6000 systems.

Many customers are experiencing very rapid growth in online storage. To accommodate this growth and reduce manual operations, you should consider tape autoloaders and tape libraries with software for automatic backup. The Model 220 is a price/capacity improvement over the 7332 Model 110. The 7332 Model 220 utilizes a 4mm DDS-4 data cartridge that provides 20 GB native capacity and up to 40 GB (with 2:1 data compression). This increased capacity, combined with the six cartridges in a magazine available for use, extends the total up to 240 GB of compressed data.

The 7332 Model 220 is also read and write compatible with the DDS-2 and DDS-3 data cartridges from earlier 4mm tape drives. A variety of complementary software is available to support the 7332 in many different backup and restore applications. The autoloader provides unattended backup of large data files while preserving your investment in 4mm tape technology.

If you are considering tape libraries with software for automatic backup because of rapid growth in online storage and a need to reduce manual operations and interventions, or if you need higher performance tape drives, consider the following:
IBM 7331 Model 305 8mm Tape Library
IBM 7337 Digital Linear Tape Library
IBM Magstar MP 3570 Tape Subsystem
IBM Magstar MP 3575 Tape Library Dataserver
IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem
IBM 3490 Enhanced Capability Magnetic Tape Subsystem
Magstar 3494 Tape Library

Supported Platforms: RS/6000 pSeries SUN & HP
