The IBM 7337 Digital Linear Tape Library is part of the IBM family of tape storage products, and can provide the answer to your enterprises' growing data storage requirements.

Model Abstract 7337-305
The IBM 7337 Model 305 is a stand-alone desktop unit. It utilizes DLT**-format tape cartridges that provide 35GB native capacity and up to 70GB with 2:1 hardware controlled data compression, giving the 7337 a typical storage capacity of up to 1.05TB with compression. The 7337 has a native data rate of 5MB per second and up to 10MB per second with compression. This is equivalent to 36GB per hour with compression on a one-drive model. A bar code reader, allowing for positive tape cartridge identification and inventory, and an operator display are included.

Description
Consider the 7337 Digital Linear Tape Library if your business is:

Experiencing growth in online storage requirements
Considering tape autoloaders and tape libraries with software to automate operations
Desiring a Digital Linear Tape drive solution

The IBM 7337 Digital Linear Tape Library is an automated tape library supported on selected IBM RS/6000 models. The 7337 Digital Linear Tape Library automates the latest DLT7000** tape drives. One removable 10-cartridge magazine and five fixed cells yield a total capacity of 15 cartridges. It can be configured with one or two DLT7000 tape drives. The latter offers additional enhanced functions such as faster transfer of data, simultaneous backup, concurrent read-write operations, and fault tolerance.

The IBM 7337 can be used for save/restore, program distribution, migration, data interchange, automatic migration of data between disk storage and tape, and mass storage for data archive. Full interchange of data is supported with the IBM 7205 Model 311 35GB External Digital Linear Tape Drive using DLT-format cartridges. In addition to reading and writing on DLT-format tape cartridges, the 7337 provides an enhanced functional alternative to 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives. Storage and tape management for the 7337 is provided by software such as IBM ADSTAR* Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM*) and other industry-leading compatible software offerings.

The 7337 tape library contains one or two DLT7000 tape drives that have a native data transfer rate of 5MB/second and a cartridge capacity of 35GB. They feature data compression hardware using an adaptation of IBM's Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) which provides an effective data rate of up to 10MB/second and a cartridge capacity of up to 70GB (with 2:1 compression) on DLT-format media. The 7337 features a 15-cartridge capacity, providing a total capacity of up to 1.05TB in the library.

Note: Although the tape drive in the 7337 provides the capability for high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. The compression technology used in the tape drive can typically double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

Each library has a display on the front panel that is used for status and error codes. An operator control panel with LCD display is on the front of the machine and provides status information including current operating mode and menu options. From this panel the operator can initiate actions such as moving and loading tape cartridges or invoking diagnostics. The 7337 has a see-through front door. A key lock provides front door locking and operator panel lockout capability for security.

The 7337 is attached via a SCSI cable to the following RS/6000 adapters:

PCI SCSI-2 Differential Fast/Wide Adapter (#2409)
Enhanced SCSI-2 Differential Fast/Wide Adapter/A (#2412)
SCSI-2 Differential Fast/Wide Adapter/A (#2416)
SCSI-2 Differential High-Performance External I/O Controller (#2420)
PCI Differential Ultra SCSI Adapter (#6207)
PCI SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Differential Adapter (#6209)
The 7337 can be used as an alternate IPL device.

The 7337 has two configurations:

Base-single host library configuration is intended for attaching the 7337 to a single host where the library is accessible to the host through one SCSI port.

Split-dual host library configuration is intended for attaching the 7337 to two hosts where the 7337 appears as two separate half-size libraries on two SCSI buses.
Note: Additional Drive feature #0702 and a second dedicated SCSI adapter are prerequisites for the split library configuration.

The 7337 library has three modes of operation:

Manual mode -- controlled by the operator panel switches, allowing complete operator control.

Autoloader mode -- automatically loads the cartridges into the drives sequentially for reading and writing.

Random mode -- allows tapes to be selected randomly by the host for reading or writing.
The 7337 Tape library comes with documentation, two keys, one power cord, and a removable cartridge magazine. Appropriate SCSI cables, interposers, and media should be ordered.

Product Positioning
As you compare competitive tape solutions, consider:

Capacity and performance requirements
Data integrity and reliability; availability
Storage usage and application requirements
Affordability
Loyalty to legacy or existing tape formats

The IBM 7337 tape library and industry-leading software applications lead in addressing these requirements and constitutes a functionally rich tape storage solution incorporating digital linear tape technology. You also gain flexibility of automated tape library management and unattended save/restore operations.

The 7337 tape library contains one or two DLT7000 tape drives that use DLT-format cartridges containing industry-leading 35GB native capacity and up to 70GB with typical 2:1 hardware data compression. This increased capacity combined with the 15 cartridges available for use extends the total library capacity up to 1.05TB of compressed data. Two-drive models provide additional enhanced functions such as: faster transfer of data, simultaneous back up, concurrent read-write operations, and fault tolerance.

The 7337 offers improved performance, additional function, and greater capacity (number of drives and cartridges) over the existing IBM 7205 Model 311 35GB Digital Linear Tape drives offered by IBM.

The 7337 protects your investment in digital linear tape technology and improves performance by eliminating load/unload time. It is read/write compatible with previous digital linear tape formats, but also provides an alternative to 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives. With its higher capacity and performance, it also is an excellent replacement for:

IBM 7207 1/4-inch Tape Drive
IBM 7206 4mm Tape Drive
IBM 7332 DDS-2 Tape Autoloader
IBM 7336 4mm Tape Library
IBM 7208 8mm tape products

If you have standardized on 8mm tape, consider the IBM 7331 8mm Tape Library Models 205 or 305. If you have applications where fast access to data is important or need a very reliable tape subsystem, you should consider the IBM Magstar MP Tape Subsystem. It offers Magstar reliability at open systems prices and is better suited for time- sensitive applications such as storage management, network serving, mixed digital libraries, image processing, and data warehousing.

If you need higher performance and/or extremely reliable tape, consider the Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem or the Magstar 3494 Tape Library.
